Sculptural Shell Bow London.

I was commissined through East Thames and Bow Arts Trust to design a sculptural feature for the courtyard of new build homes, Payne Road, Bow London.

The concept is based on the excavation that is going on in the area due to the regeneration for the London Olympic sites.

It is a large but flat shell – similar to the New Zealand paua shell in shape. A sculptor fabricated the shell from my designs and the shell itself, he then made a reign mould and cast it in cement to be covered in mosaic.

The idea was to show the inverse of a mosaic in three-dimensional form that might be unearthed in the future.

I worked with children from the local area to design motifs based on East End landmarks and familiar sights.  We also wanted to represent modern gadgets and personal talismans that might be dug up from the river in the future.

The millennium dome, pearly kings and queens, the bow bells, old boots, modern trainers, i-pods, jellied eels and jewels were some of the images depicted in the sculpture.
